Boston’s Charles F. Hurley Building and the Erich Lindemann Mental Health Center are a great example of Brutalist architecture. The use of the brutalist style was apparently quite disastrous for the Mental Health Centre part of the building. The chapel inside the building apparently inspired one of its patients to self immolate themselves on the altar (the chapel was boarded up as a consequence). The interior apparently leeds to disorientation and there are plenty of unsafe zones in and around the building. The building itself has not aged well. However as Hugh Romney at Woodstock said: “There’s always a little bit of heaven in a disaster area”. It is quite a stunning building – pity it needs to be used for something.
